It doesn't matter whether you're working on a muscle car restoration or a hot rod, you're going to need a lot of the same basic tools.
Here's a list of some that will be needed in just about every restoration scenario.
Wrenches
While this may be obvious to some, you really need a good set of strong wrenches if you want to be able to restore a car. You'll need all different sizes so don't just get an adjustable. Companies like Craftman make high quality, inexpensive ones that usually come with a great warranty.
Screwdrivers
You'll need both a set of Philips and Flat-head for most cars. Flat heads are great because they can also be used to remove old trim in lieu of a chisel.
Torque Wrench and Socket Set
A true staple at every auto restoration shop is the the torque wrench. This is crucial for safety, as any nuts and bolts that will be subject to some kind of 'load' should be fastened as tightly as possible. It's also important that you have a wide variety of socket sizes available as nut sizes change depending on the make and year of the auto.
Flashlight
This is an often over looked tool. Usually auto restoration projects are done in dark garages so it'll definitely save you some trouble to have a flashlight handy.
Belt Sander
Some people choose to go to their local auto restoration shop to let their mechanics sand old paint and rust off of their car's body, but if you're doing it yourself, you're gonna want a small belt sander. Trust me, you're NOT gonna want to do it with just sand paper and elbow grease. This is a big time saver.
